"Pictured here is Ella Waldek, born Else Shevchenko, one of the great figures in the golden age of wrestling. She personified muscular grace with contempt for her adversaries and a profound ability to crush opposition. A woman in a man's sport, a man's world and in a man's time; she was a true pioneer of the Resist movement. She was also my great aunt.
I wanted to make an image of strength and hope, so Ella was my first choice. I included our Ukrainian surname tattooed on her chest to visualize some hope for Ukraine as well, struggling against fascism far away, but deep in my heart.
